A Path Revealed

Hi my name is Katherine Burnett and I have had both the pleasure and the honor of becoming a part of the Birch Bay Ranch family. Starting at the young age of 8 a young girl who wanted nothing more than to follow in her sister’s footsteps I followed them right to the gates of Birch Bay Ranch. And as her sister moved on to other things this young girl found her own path and a life to live where she was surrounded by the light and the love of the Lord.  I never grew up in a very religious household and rarely attended church, the opportunity to come to Birch Bay once and sometimes twice a year has allowed me to grow as a person: and I can honestly say that if it were not for Birch Bay I shudder at the thought of the path I might have gone down.

You might have noticed that earlier I mentioned the Birch Bay “Family”. That is because that is exactly what we are. Once I became too old to be a camper I stubbornly refused to leave and then became a counselor. As a counselor I discovered that the sense of belonging I had felt as a camper was not uncommon. The staff of Birch Bay Ranch, both past and present, share a bond of friendship and love that can never be broken. It is a place I had hoped to share with my cousin in the future and hope to still be able to. To one day go there and see the difference we as staff can make for the future generation.

Birch Bay was not just a place I came to learn about God, but also a place where I could have fun. Many enter the camp expecting the typical run of the mill camp. But Birch Bay has gone above and beyond the norm. There I learned to climb walls and to repel myself out of a tower; I also learned to overcome my fear of horses and had the privilege of working as horse staff this past summer.

Birch Bay Ranch for all intents and purposes is a camp. But as I sit here writing this I reminisce on everything it means to me and the ones I call family. A place I have always felt safe. Every moment is a guaranteed laugh. Walking into main lodge and being bombarded by the memories that have paved the path to where I am today. To those who have ever been to Birch Bay, both past and present, I say this: The path home leads to Birch Bay Ranch.

Sincerely
Katherine

Best Way to Spend Summer

I've had the privilege of being able to go to Birch Bay Ranch as both a camper and as staff. I can honestly say that I've enjoyed every minute of being out at Birch Bay Ranch. As a camper, I loved riding the horses and getting to spend time with God's creation. Campfire was another one of my favourites as a camper. It was a time that we could goof around and be silly, but then there was also a time to be serious and really connect with God. Campfire was always something I looked forward to.

This year I had the privilege of being on staff. All the staff were so friendly and full of joy. They had so much energy and enthusiasm about everything we did. It was evident that they were there to serve God. It was amazing to be able to help the campers in their walk with God. I am so blessed to have had the so many amazing experiences at Birch Bay Ranch. I could not have thought of a better way to spend my summer.

Rich Environment

I heard about Birch Bay Ranch through a friend. As she shared stories about her experiences there, I appreciated that a facility like this existed and promoted such a rich environment for people in our community; not just take in the Lords teaching but to experience outdoor adventure activities that this ranch provides.

I was asked about possibly contributing a silent auction item from the company I work with for their fundraiser this year. My company was unable to provide one, so I decided to personally make a donation for BBR. I thought a place that provides such a great culture should be given a contribution to help sustain its goals. As far as I know the silent auction was a success. Soon after the fundraiser, I got to see Birch Bay Ranch for myself. I was invited to see the ranch, thinking I wouldn't mind petting a horse or two, but to my surprise I was invited for a ride a horse through BBR land!  It was a very enjoyable and a fantastic experience.

It was my first time riding and will not be my last. My prayers go out for Birch Bay Ranch. I hope that the means will come together to keep what I believe is a great place going for many others to enjoy and be encouraged by.

My hopes and prayers go out to all.

Influence of Birch Bay Ranch

My name is Sarah Peterson and Birch Bay Ranch has been a special part of my life since I first went to summer camp when I was seven years old. I first heard about Birch Bay from my church and some friends who were campers there. They told me all about how much fun it was with the horse-back riding, zip lines and all of the cool staff members. I remember hearing about how much the camp involved God in everything that the staff and campers did and for me, being raised in a Christian home, I thought that it was great.

I went to Birch Bay and everything was better than my friends said that it was so I kept going back for quite a few years until I could volunteer and become a staff member. Being a staff member has taught me so much. I know that I would not be the person I am today if I didn’t have Birch Bay as a sanctuary and comfortable place for all of those years. When life for me was tough a bit this past year I knew that I could go back to Birch Bay and be welcomed back without hesitation. I love being a part of the ministry there and seeing all of those kids with smiles on their faces as they do their activities. I know how much of an influence Birch Bay Ranch has had in my life and I’ve seen it work in the lives of others.

I have watched the campers that I have had in my cabins go back to the camp year after year and have seen their knowledge of God grow. They learn so much and I know that they do because I learned so much when I was a camper there. My faith has grown so much because of the time that I have spent at Birch Bay and I appreciate everything that the ranch has done for me and my family. I really hope that this ministry can continue and that many more children will learn about God because of Birch Bay Ranch.

Sincerely,

Sarah Peterson

Strengthened My Faith

Hi, my name is Riley Anderson. I am a recent graduate from Grant MacEwan’s School of Business and I was introduced to Birch Bay Ranch by family friends in 2003. I first came to Birch Bay Ranch as a teenage camper and while I was already a Christian at this time, I will admit that my faith was not strong at that time.

In the one week I spent at the camp, I found a place I could and would call home. I came back as a camper the following year and found my faith was stronger due to the spiritual influence of Birch Bay. In 2005, I was called to join the Birch Bay Ranch staff as a volunteer and I was more than willing to return to there, summer after summer. The more I volunteered, the stronger my faith became and the value of Birch Bay had a significant impact in shaping the young man I was growing to be.

In 2008, the calling of the Ranch grew stronger and so I joined the Birch Bay Ranch staff in a paid position. I stayed with Birch Bay Ranch for most of the time while I attended University. I watched in awe as children and new volunteers alike grew in their faiths over the course of many summers. There was one volunteer who invited me to attend his baptism. I learned there that I was one of those who had influenced him through the ministry at Birch Bay Ranch. During my time working for the Ranch, I have been confronted with issues that fortified my own faith and aided me in discussion of my beliefs with believers and non-believers alike.

I can quite honestly say that if it wasn’t for the influence of Birch Bay Ranch on my life, I would not be the same young man that I am today. The ministry at Birch Bay Ranch is a strong ministry that has a strong impact on me and my family as well as those around me. I sincerely hope that this ministry will be able to continue spreading the good word and strengthen the faith of those who pass through its gates.

Regards,
Riley Anderson

What a Life Changing Experience!

The work being done at Birch Bay Ranch can be compared to that of organizations such as World Vision.  The scale may be smaller, but the task is no less important as it affects the lives of children and families in our own part of the world.  As our society becomes more and more secular , the opportunities for our children ( or anyone else ) to be exposed to Christianity are
becoming few and far between.

Since my daughter became involved with Birch Bay Ranch last summer, I have been overwhelmed by the number of people who have not only heard of the camp , but have sent their children there over the years and continue to do so.  These are people who never go to church and are not even necessarily Christians, but have heard such good things about BBR that they happily send their children.

What an opportunity!

To be able to draw all of these children into the arms of Jesus by the loving, teaching, worshiping and fun that is evident at Birch Bay Ranch 24/7.

In our own family, BBR has been a great unexpected Blessing.  My daughter was having difficulty finding a direction for her life when a friend of hers suggested she volunteer at BBR last summer.  He had been a leader at the camp the previous year and thought she might like it.
She has suffered from anxiety since the age of 7 and had always wanted to go to camp, but could not stay away from home overnight.

What a life changing experience!

She has been thriving at BBR! First as a volunteer leader last summer , then fall staff, spring staff, summer leader again this year and now fall staff again.  She has been able to utilize all of her skills - acting, writing, singing, improv., leadership and caring for children.  Most importantly, she has grown spiritually and now has a strong faith of her own that is able to share with others.

Without BBR I am not sure of the life she would be leading now , but I know it would not have been so grounded faith.  I am so happy for her and proud of all she is accomplishing because of Birch Bay Ranch!

I was fortunate enough this summer to be able to use one week of my vacation from work to help out in the kitchen at BBR.  I was able to witness first hand the awesome work that is done all day everyday by all of those involved in the BBR ministry.  The love of God and presence of Jesus is felt  in all activities and gatherings - the children attending the camp cannot help but feel that embrace throughout their stay. It's no wonder so many come back again and again!

I pray that the ministry at BBR will continue long into the future.  I would like to still be volunteering when my grandchildren and great grandchildren attend camp!
:)

Sincerely,

Lesli Anderson

Life Change Before Your Eyes

It is safe to say that Birch Bay Ranch has played an important part of shaping my Christian life.

It was the first and only Christian camp I ever attended, I was a camper for three years. I ended up liking it so much that I became a staff member.Even though I was a Christian before coming out to Birch Bay Ranch it still surprised me how much closer I grew to God and how much more I learned about him.

I only worked at Birch Bay for two years (15 weeks, which is pretty good considering my current age of sixteen). The impact of the ranch on the campers, and the staff as well, is massive. In one week you could see a camper's life change right in front of your very eyes. I am glad that I got to be a part of it. It's an amazing feeling knowing that you're out helping kids learn about Christ and see campers come out year after year, or even week after week, because they can't get enough.

Birch Bay Ranch has grown to be like a second home to me, I almost know the place like the back of my hand. I come home and try to recruit my brother into becoming a staff member, which always ends in him saying that 'someone needs to help around the farm' because I'm always at Birch Bay Ranch working.

The staff add to the overall experience, always there if you need to talk, ready to answer any question to the best of their abilities. They help create a positive Christian vibe that is contagious. The entire ranch feels like a safe haven, where you can go to sing, dance, laugh your head off, do crazy things, and praise The Lord all at the same time!

Birch Bay Ranch
Where the food is amazing
The staff are family
God is seen everywhere
And the experience is surreal.

Thank you for taking time to read my ramblings.

A Camp Set Apart

My name is Amanda Olsen and I had the pleasure of being 4 month staff out at Birch Bay Ranch for two consecutive years. My experience out at the ranch was incredible (as it's clear so many other peoples have been), I had been staffing out at another camp in Alberta for a few years prior to coming to Birch Bay and just felt that I was not surrounded by the type of people that were passionate for Christ 12 months of the year. I was a young Christian that wanted to take my faith seriously, so I thought about working at a different camp and hoped for a better experience. I felt The Lord prompt me to apply to staff at Birch Bay Ranch.

I had gone to the ranch as a camper for a few years when I was about 8 & 9 years old, but I hadn't had much interaction since. I applied, was accepted and started work in May of 2010. I felt so accepted, so valued, so cared for. I was shocked at how the director and administrator went above and beyond to treat their hardworking staff. It only made me want to work harder for them. When I went through personal struggles with friends or in relationships, they were always there to speak with, guide me and pray for me. The staff at Birch Bay Ranch discipled me and I grew in my faith like never before at camp - they really know what discipleship is at the core.

After my two years at Birch Bay I got married and my husband and I spent the next summer at a very prestigious camp in British Columbia called RockRidge Canyon. It is a Young Life Camp of Canada and is one of the highest class camps in all of Canada. I found myself missing the way I was valued and appreciated for all my hard hours of work, like I was at Birch Bay Ranch. It's not that RockRidge was really doing anything "wrong", but I missed being treated to a special meal, getting a free T-Shirt or a free pair of pants. I missed being able to go to the "Tuck Shop" and get a little snack or drink free of charge. I realized there was so many things that Birch Bay Ranch really did "right" that the other camps I had served at were not doing. I found myself making suggestions to the camp director at RockRidge to change what he was doing to be more like Birch Bay Ranch. It all seemed a little crazy in my mind, that a fairly small, humble camp in Alberta held my heart more than a multi-million dollar first class camping facility in beautiful British Columbia.

Since being away from Birch Bay, I have always been welcomed back with open arms. Birch Bay Ranch gave me the opportunity to take a young girl of 15 horse back riding every week out at the Ranch through the winter of 2011-2012. Like all 15 year olds, she really needed someone to give her positive one on one attention and the chance to participate in an activity that fostered responsibility in her life. She ended up buying a horse from the ranch and because of their willingness to let me bring her out riding, her life will never be the same. The camp leadership constantly says "YES!" to the opportunity to make a positive difference in someones life, no matter what that looks like.

This summer, I was brought my friend (who is from China) to the ranch to experience an afternoon "Birch Bay Ranch" style. She loved it so much. All the staff were so kind to her and gave her opportunities that she would otherwise NEVER have had. She said it was the best day she had had all summer. Afterwards, she told me that when she has kids, she wants to send them to Birch Bay Ranch. She is not a believer, but the fact that she would be open to sending her children to a Christian camp, just because she had such a wonderful experience over a couple of hours is amazing to me.

There is no camp or rental facility that I can recommend to any one more than Birch Bay Ranch. I constantly speak about it in the highest regard, because it is run at an incredibly high standard by absolutely incredible people. Birch Bay Ranch is unlike any place I have ever been, from being a camper to staffing all my experiences there have been nothing short of amazing. God is working through the leadership and staff today, tomorrow and always. I would like to say that as a young Christian, there was no better place I could be to grow in my faith and become the woman I am today. Birch Bay Ranch has shaped my life forever, and for that I am eternally grateful.

God has a plan for this place.

Amanda Olsen

Eternally Grateful

The day the Birch Bay Ranch summer camp brochure and registration form arrived in the mail was one of extreme excitement. I had been dying to go. They take kids as young as eight years old, but our parents had a rule that we had to be nine to go. All three of my older sisters had gone. The sister closest in age to me had already been twice, and came home with amazing stories of riding horses and hanging out with awesome, cool staff members. I filled out the form myself – a tradition that would last for all the years I attended camp – and then the countdown was on. I remember losing sleep at night in excitement. It was honestly better than Disneyland. It was the highlight of my year.

I fell in love with the first horse I ever rode at Birch Bay Ranch. Getting the chance to ride this horse every day for a whole week was a dream come true. I wished that he could be mine. Attending camp there was the first real time I’d ever ridden a horse (if you don’t count those sad pony rides at the zoo where all the ponies are led by some metal contraption). I loved every minute of it, even the horse theory classes and the test at the end of the week. I was certain that I was meant to ride horses for the rest of my life.

The year was 1996.

Fast forward seventeen years: I’ve had the priveledge of taking countless riding lessons, have travelled all over Alberta competing in horse shows, have led hundreds of trail rides at BBR, have driven the team of draft horses on sleigh rides in the numbing cold, yelled “pull back and say whoooooa!” more times than I’ve cared to, and have had the joy of owning and training my own horse. Together, my horse and I have ridden at lots of different barns, attended clinics and ridden in horse shows, but my favourite moments with him are the ones we’ve spent exploring Birch Bay Ranch’s property together, just he and I. The hours in the sun spent riding along the reedy lakeside, picking our way through the forest or full-out galloping down the hayride road in back pasture have been so singularly sweet. Access to such a beautiful place is a rare gift that I will forever be grateful for.

Needless to say, I attended camp every summer. When I was sixteen, I volunteered all summer at the Ranch. I worked every summer after that, and when I was out of high school, I dedicated four months of the summer to the Ranch as well. How many people can say they truly loved their job? I loved those moments sitting with campers on the cabin floor, answering questions about God and life. I loved bringing the horses out to pasture Friday nights. I loved learning the ins and outs of the ropes course. I even loved doing the dishes, feeling tired and satisfied after a job well done. I would have done any job they asked me to, because I loved Birch Bay Ranch so much. I have worked there on and off for the past ten years, eventually coming back to use my communications degree to help market and raise funds for this awesome ministry.

Lately, I’ve been reminiscing about some of my favourite memories: taking part in improv skits (some of my old favourites are Things in a Box, Lines from a Hat and, that old classic, I Have A Pain), making my whole cabin raise their right hands and solemnly swear that they will not drop any peas on the floor each week on roast beef night, sharing my heart with the other staff at morning devotions, gathering with the other female staff in girls dorm just to hang out each night, taking my cabin of twelve-year-old girls up to the top of Super Tower each week, first to spit off the tower and pretend it was a grand secret, and then to look out at the beautiful surroundings, talk about God’s incredible power and His majestic creation. I could go on for pages and pages about the wonderful things I’ve gotten to take part in at camp. But mostly, I’m just thankful.

Birch Bay Ranch has given me a lot of things. It gave me the chance to meet an incredible man who would eventually become my husband. It gave me true, solid lifelong friends who I know will be a part of my life for a very long time. It gave me leadership and interpersonal skills I didn’t know I had. I learned how to speak in front of large crowds, how to make people laugh, how to open my heart to strangers and show them God’s love. It taught me the value of teamwork and a good work ethic. I learned how to listen to the voice of God and how to commune with Him through nature. I learned, for the first time in my life, what it meant to be a part of a thriving, loving Christian community. I’m not sure where my walk with God would be without community and discipleship that the Ranch has provided me.

Birch Bay Ranch is immeasurably special to me. It completely shaped me, and I know my life would look nothing like the one I’m living now without it. I am eternally grateful to God for the true gift it has been to be a part of such an incredible ministry.

Godly Outreach

Our first visit to it was to attend the wedding of a close friend who worked there. Having heard much about the ranch for several years prior, it was about time to check it out. We were impressed with the staff and the ranch itself.

Several years later we were in a transitional phase in our lives. We needed a temporary home and wanted to be involved in ministry while we awaited further direction. Birch Bay kindly opened its parking lot (and a whole lot more) to us and our family of four boys; we spent the summer in our bus there. The Directors and their staff were (are) fantastic, we were able to be involved in serving and the various activities that ensued; we felt most welcomed. If we had been able to get housing there, we were considering staying on. We have returned for visits a couple of times over the years and always received a very warm welcome and spiritual encouragement. Birch Bay is like a home away from home.

Over the past few years we have watched while they set goals for their facility and attained them- new washrooms, more activities, riding arena, shop, etc. Many people have donated much time and effort to contribute to the improvements at BBR and I can't even begin to touch the impact it has had on myriads of people in regards to their walk with God.

We don't even want to consider the idea that such an amazing facility as BBR may have to shut down and be torn from its ministry.   All those God-given talents, achievements and potential, gone...the loss would be widespread.

The fact is that the original donors had a vision which Birch Bay fulfills very well. The very motto, "Birch Bay Ranch exists to provide a natural & nurturing environment where people encounter God & experience positive life change" We feel it is important to honor the wishes and vision of the original donors.

We hope & pray that as those in charge of this decision pray and sort through the details they will consider the incredible, Godly outreach they have through the Ranch and continue to support it as they have in the past.

Sincerely,

Howard & Nicky Moody

Ridiculous Adventures

My best summer memories revolve around Birch Bay Ranch. When I first came to BBR I thought it would be like every other camp but that for sure wasn't true . It has so much to offer! I learned so much about God , riding horses and had so many adventures. I was that kid that sent in my forms for summer camp in winter because I was so excited ! Camp was such a different atmosphere for me to be surrounded by. Growing up in a non-Christian home BBR really opened my eyes to see and discover Christ. It's crazy how much five days of camp can change you. I left my first week of camp a Christian and with a giant smile. After my first week as a camper I was hooked.  I came to camp for various years after my first and have looked forward to going out ever since . I came out this summer and volunteered six weeks and I absolutely loved it. Being surrounded by so many people with same beliefs was great. Watching the kids grow in their faith while out at camp is incredible and rewarding. The campers love the ropes course, horses , archery range and all the fun and ridiculous adventures we have. Its pretty cool how intrigued the kids are when it comes to learning about Christ, there like sponges soaking in all the stories. One of the many things I love about  BBR is the staff are always there for the campers to answer their questions and they are so loving, nurturing and  kind.  As  a camper and staff  you feel so loved by the people surrounding you. I have made so many amazing memories and friends there . This camp isn't  just a summer camp to me, it is a place where I met friends , made memories and became a Christian . This camp has changed so many people's lives , and has become a safe place for many people where they can be loved for who they are. Without the ranch I wouldn't be the person I am today, and I wouldn't have met the amazing people I did out there . I love this camp and I hope it has many more years to come !

Safe Haven

Life without Birch Bay Ranch is something that I simply cannot imagine. Birch Bay Ranch has been a refuge and a safe haven for me during one of the most difficult times in my life. It not only provides a place of employment, but Birch Bay Ranch is family. It is a place where I am growing spiritually and where I have the opportunity to touch the lives of many each day.

MedNi!

Until this year Birch Bay Ranch was unknown to me.. Throughout the 3 months I've worked there many things have changed. Before I started there I was having many doubts about Gods existence and I was searching for many answers but was afraid to seek them. As the summer progressed I made many great friends who I'm sure will be around for years to come, and I learned to seek the answers I desire instead of just wanting the answers. As I got more answers my faith grew. Before summer had started I questioned if I was truly a christian but after 3 months at Birch Bay I know that I truly feel that I am a christian and that without going to Birch Bay I would not of taken these steps to get closer to God.

Wagon Wheel Chandeliers

Once upon a time in a land not so far away there was a three year old girl. One day her Mommy and Daddy took her to a wonderful place. There were a lot of people there and everyone was gathering on rows of tall benches to watch a show. It was a horse show!

She saw her sisters riding horses in the big arena. There were lots of big kids there! They were singing and cheering and having so much fun. There was music playing and someone was even selling candy! There was so much excitement, one thing led to another and before she knew it...

It happened. I rode a horse at Birch Bay Ranch for the first time, but definitely not the last.

You think I would be a better rider having such an early start, but alas, in the 6 years I attended summer camp I was never crowned All Round Cowgirl. Not even once. It didn’t help that my younger sister was the All Round Cowgirl....Every. Single. Summer.

Okay, so I’ll admit I don’t actually remember riding that horse back when I was three. I do remember sitting in the grand stands watching a BBR rodeo. It was raining and everyone was hiding under umbrellas and plastic ponchos. I remember being in a very crowded Main Lodge, which I’m assuming was for a pancake breakfast. The thing I remember the most is the wagon wheel chandeliers. Every time I look up at those things (and may they always remain there) I remember the day I saw them for the first time in 1987.

Then the day came when I was IN THE HORSE SHOW. That week at camp everyone called me Elmo, but I can’t remember why. I was riding a horse named Empress and was in the pole bending event. I raced through my pole bending at a speedy trot and opened up into a full lope to get back to the other end of the arena and to the finish line. My Edmonton Trappers hat flew off my head and into the mud (we didn’t wear helmets then) and my mushroom cut was blowing in the wind! I crossed the finish line and the CROWD WENT WILD!! (that is how I remember it) The glorious pole bending victory was mine and I had a red ribbon to show for it! I was so happy over my achievement that I forgot it was time for another event and was aimlessly wandering around the arena thinking about how awesome I was at riding horses.

“Elmo, get back to the fence and stand with your group,” boomed the voice out of the loud speaker. I looked up to the announcer’s booth and wondered how that man in the white cowboy hat knew my nickname, or any name of mine really. I ran through the muddy arena excited to receive a round of high fives from my group. The Cowpokes.

When I left camp that summer I remember thinking that was the best week of my life. I am so blessed to have so many best weeks of my life, for my entire life, at that very place.

I was raised in a Christian home and went to a Christian school. I already knew Jesus when I came out to Birch Bay Ranch. I was a camper in the 1990s. My childhood experiences at Birch Bay Ranch are so rich, full of love, so much fun, and are the foundation of my faith. I vividly remember the testimonies of staff who worked there; they shared their passion for God, their love for Him and for the campers there. They taught me how to ride horses, paddle a canoe, and how to go upside down on the Burma zip. They cheered me on, they encouraged me, and I’ll always remember that. Your examples of friendship and love to me were instrumental in confirming my commitment to Christ, developing my relationship to Him, and learning how to listen, pray and witness to others. Thank you.

By the time I was a teenager I was into Birch Bay Ranch big time. Despite all my efforts I was only able to pass one, yes just one, riding level throughout my camper years. They used to have ‘levels’ and ‘tests’ and I remember wishing with all my heart that I could just be in Level C! Alas, it never happened and before I knew it I was too old to be a camper and I came back to BBR as staff. Ironically, I was horse staff...for several years.

“On the count of three we are going to circle your horses. So we’re going to move our reigns over to the left, give our horses a little nudge with the outside leg and ask them to circle. One...two...no, wait three, on Creme where are you going? Don’t let him do that with the reins, wait...on Mr. Supreme, we are having a lesson on THIS side of the arena so steer him this way... on Fernando that was a great circle. Wait, why are you not wearing any shoes? What do you mean you don’t know where you kicked off your shoes? On Creme...come back!!!”

Okay, I was ready to admit there was a reason I never passed Level B. I have a lot of skills and abilities, but most of them thrive away from the barn. After a few awkward summers I finally let someone know I didn’t want to be on horse staff and over the next several years I did almost every other job there is to do at Birch Bay Ranch.

The truth is I would have stayed on horse staff if they needed me to. I would have done any job they asked me to if it meant I could stay at Birch Bay Ranch. This place radiates God’s love and I am drawn to it like a magnet. It truly is the place where the lost are found, where the hopeless find hope, and where everyone finds a nurturing community and a loving home. I’ve discovered pure joy here and I’ve seen that joy in the faces of thousands throughout my time there.

Over the last 12 years I have spoken at campfire more times than I can count, and no matter what crazy story I tell, or what the message is that night, I make sure to tell those kids how much God loves them. I start every prayer at campfire thanking God for them. I see myself in them. I want to see them speaking at campfire one day, just like I am, and just like the ones who spoke to me as a child.

Then I DO see them. The children who listened to my stories, the generation I taught how to circle their horses and do the funky chicken, have grown up. I’ve sat in the stands and listened to them share their faith with the new generation of campers. I’ve seen them bring today’s children to the Lord. This next generation of passionate advocates for Jesus Christ are now pouring into my life and I feel closer to God because of them. This is what Birch Bay Ranch is all about.

I haven’t officially worked at Birch Bay Ranch since 2007, but I am just has much a part of it as I ever was. Once you are a part of it you are always a part of it. The people who counselled me as a child, who mentored me as a teen and young adult, the best friends I've made there, and those who grew from campers to friends...all of them would never be such an integral part of my life if it weren’t for Birch Bay Ranch.  At BBR I gained self confidence, developed strong communication skills, work ethic, and learned about teamwork.  I learned what it means to be friends with Jesus.

I also learned, with the help of one of my best friends, how to navigate a milk crate ship through a pretend ocean.

I can honestly say that Birch Bay Ranch has shaped me into the woman I am today. I am so incredibly grateful to belong to this community, to contribute to it, and to have experienced a lifetime of love.

Whatever happens I call dibs on the wagon wheel chandeliers.

Amy Hancock

PS. I really do like horses.

Many Opportunities

When I was ten years old, my Mom gave me the opportunity to go to Birch Bay Ranch for their Open House. I said no, and we went anyway. Ever since that day Birch Bay has given me nothing but opportunities – opportunities I wouldn’t have had anywhere else.

It was where I learned to work on the ropes course, and was eventually the Ropes Course Coordinator. It was where I learned about horses, how to teach riding lessons and eventually to drive the team of draft horses that pulls the hay wagon. Once I didn’t kill anyone any of those places, I taught canoeing and archery, and participated in countless skits. I learned how to play the guitar and how to lead worship. I learned how to drive a tractor. I ended up working on every area of the Ranch, eventually returning last year to work year-round on Maintenance.

I learned all of these skills in one place, surrounded by a nurturing community of like-minded individuals. This is part of what makes Birch Bay so unique. I can’t think of any place that would provide me with so many different opportunities and see to my personal and spiritual growth at the same time. It is a place where people come together and have the opportunity to be a witness for God and show love to others in an active, real way. When you give to Birch Bay, it enriches you, giving you the skills and resources to pour back into it. I am thankful for all it has given me.

Investments for the Kingdom

Birch Bay Ranch holds a special place in the hearts of countless people. Though I spent many of my childhood summers there as a camper, I was also blessed enough to live there for a time. In addition to this, two of my best and oldest friends grew up on the ranch, making Birch Bay a place I frequented on a nearly constant basis.

The beautiful thing about Birch Bay however, was not just that I had grown to love it, but the fact that Birch Bay loved me, and the countless other children who passed through its gates every year. Visitors can feel the love of Christ the moment they step onto the property - a feeling that many who visit experience for the first time in their lives.

Over the years, the accessibility to the ranch has given thousands of children a chance to experience God in the most beautiful and inoffensive surroundings. While the Church itself tries its best to be welcoming, it can be incredibly intimidating for most who are unfamiliar with the gospel. But the ranch has proved its worth countless times by bringing lost children into their Fathers kingdom. The beautiful thing about the Birch Bay Ranch ministry is that to us, it seems humble with its back-woods atmosphere and old wood buildings. But in reality, in the eyes of our Saviour, it is one of the most precious and valuable branches of His ministry. (1 Peter 5:2-3)

No value can be placed on the eternal life, but if it could, Birch Bay would be one of the best investments one could make for the Kingdom. It provides exposure to the Gospel through some of the best summer camp experiences a child could hope for, and the best part is, is that when a parent send their child for a week away at camp, they could in fact be unknowingly sending their child into the safety of the Kingdom.

For generations now, Birch Bay has been giving children an opportunity to grow spiritually. My grandfather helped clear the land when it was first gifted to Central Church; my mom spent countless summers attending as a child; I essentially grew up on the grounds; and I pray that I will not be robbed of the chance to continue my family's legacy at Birch Bay, for one day send my own children there as I know that they will learn things there that not even a church could teach them. They will learn how to minister, they will learn how to encourage others, and by God's grace they will send their own children to Birch Bay one day. Because the value of the ranch is not in dollars and cents, it was not given freely by one generous man for financial gain, but it is valued by God in the utmost (Matthew 6:21). And to rob Him of a successful ministry would be one of the most disappointing things I can think of.

God bless you, and all decisions regarding Birch Bay!

Sincerely, Keltie Demchuk

Remembering the Good Times

Oh where do I start. I was a camper from the age of 8 many years ago here at the ranch. That was where I became a christian and never once did I look back on my decision. I am forever grateful for the staff and people that were present when I became a christian.

I remember always meeting the coolest people at camp and creating the most ridiculous memories ( I once sat in the commitment pond fully clothed and refused to get out because it was such a childlike thing to do and I loved it! ). I, not too long after  being a camper, became a staff member! When I was 14 I volunteered as many weeks as my parents would let me to work at this spectacular place and each year since then I have returned as a volunteer ( never able to commit an entire summer sadly).

Six years down the road, I still always manage to get a few weeks in here and there. I always tend to forget what the outside world is like when I'm at BBR. Everytime I drive through the birch bay gates I can't help but smile at the silly things that have gone down at that place. It has definitely shaped my kwerky personality and I have developed the most incredible friendships being involved with this camp. One of my most favorite things: running into a camper in the outside world and having them recognize me and having just a moment of awkward nostalgia of Birch Bay.

Outdoor Education Adventures

Hi, my name is Morgan Nikel and I've only been out to Birch Bay Ranch a handful of times, but my good friend Annette Wagers works there, and when she told me about the possibility of it being shut down I was devastated. I have some great memories of Birch Bay! The most recent one happened just this summer when I was visiting Annette one evening as she led her group of young campers and taught them about God. It was heartwarming to see. However, the story I would like to share is from quite a few years ago.

When I was in grade 8, my Outdoor Education class organized an overnight camping trip to Birch Bay Ranch. I was beyond excited about the prospect of spending my days on zip lines and climbing walls and spending my night roasting marshmallows around the campfire with my friends. It was my first time going on an overnight field trip as well, so I was slightly nervous. All of the kids packed tents, backpacks, food and warm jackets. It was spring, and we were warned that it could snow. We set up our tents a ways away from the maid cabin and then started our activities for the day. My friends and I went canoeing, rock climbing, zip lining and played soccer. At night we told ghost stories and made food over the campfire. We bundled up for sleep and survived the chilly spring night. The next day we worked through obstacle courses and did all of our favourite activities again. Our final mission for the day (excluding packing up) was to take a huge group picture. All of the kids laid on the ground under the climbing wall, while my teacher went to the top to snap a picture of us all. I can still remember giggling the entire time I was laying on that gravel. That camping trip was a highlight of grade 8 for me. Thanks to Birch Bay, I was able to have fun with my friends while learning about teamwork and responsibility.  While we weren't there for a church related camp, it was still an amazing experience that I believe every student should get the opportunity to have!

I hope that this little story helps! Birch Bay Ranch is a wonderful place that brings such a sense of love and faith to the community. I hope that it remains open for years and years to come!

From a Parent of a Staff Member

Has God been working through Birch Bay Ranch Camp??? I would say an unequivocal ‘YES’.  My daughter has been working there for 2 spring and summers.

God has used Birch Bay to grow Becky in amazing ways.  He has affirmed her vocation of teaching Elementary School.  He has given her grace to handle difficult situations.  He has allowed her to grow as a leader with a heart to see kids know Jesus for themselves.  The directors and other staff at Birch Bay have mentored, guided, taught, given her opportunities to lead, make mistakes and grow from them.

And you can’t forget the horses… I don’t know why but horses soften hearts and reach kids in a special way.  Every time I pick her up, I can’t wait to hear the stories of how God has been at work not only in her life but in the kids.  Every time I drop her off, I pray for the camp and God’s blessings on it.  I pray for strength, courage, safety and wisdom for the leaders and open hearts for the campers because it is to God’s glory that the camp operates every day and every week.

Thank you,

Janice Parsons

Real Relationships

I had the privilege of raising my family at BBR. The loving, safe caring community of believers has shaped my children's lives. Wendellyn asked Jesus into her heart at camp. My closest friends (Rachel Maskowitz, Tasha Eddy, Jackie den otter) I met at camp. We continue to hold each other up spiritually even after camp. Camp is a unique place where deep lasting friendships and relationships begin. Not only relationships with one another, but relationships with the Lord our God.

Thanks to all the staff, campers, and donators for making camp a place to belong and grow.

A Message from Beyond the Ranch

Although I have never had a direct experience with Birch Bay Ranch, I have had witnessed the impact that it has had on a very special young woman. Annette Wagers, who is passionately canvassing for the continuation of the ranch, has shared marvellous stories of her adventures at Birch Bay Ranch. Through Annette's eyes I have learnt of the camaraderie, the love, the forgiveness and sharing that this sanctuary has encouraged. I think the fact that BBR sends a message beyond the faiths that support it is incredible. That is stewardship at its finest!

Jesus said that all hope lies with the children. To understand the full impact of this simple statement one only has to talk to a therapist. Most messed up adults started as troubled kids. I hope that Birch Bay Ranch may can extend it's reach so that even more youth may experience its environment. Christianity is a way of life and Birch Bay teaches youth how the teachings of Christ are taken out of the church. I pray that this place continues.

Preparing to Lead

My name is Kevin Korthuis, my life at Birch Bay Ranch started this year in 2013. While my experiences with BBR are very new I have learned so much and grown incredibly here. Over the years I have had the privilege to serve at Camp Nakamun and Gull Lake Camp; two amazing camps that have been able to reach thousands of kids.

This year God blessed me with being able to come to BBR to work with and learn from the amazing people here. BBR while yes is one of many over night kid camps throughout Alberta it is one of the most special camp I've had the privilege to work for. BBR has amazing facilities and resources that this summer were used to reach 800 kids and bring them closer to Gods kingdom. On top of that there were well over 50 staff members and volunteers who have left these gates and will never be the same because of their experiences at BBR; I am one of those impacted staff members. I have been pursuing a career in camp ministries for the past 2 years and when I came here I never thought I would ever be ready to lead a camp. After this summer I can say I am no longer scared to pursue camp director positions because BBR has taught and prepared me in ways I couldn't have imagined in the spring time. I didn't think I was a very good public speaker but I had 9 opportunities to speak to the kids at camp fires about God and what He means to us. I also was taken under the wing of the Director and shown how to lead in a loving and Godly way, I will carry those lessons with me forever. More over the practical things I learned about leading at BBR I grew so much closer with God, being in an environment like what BBR provides it's hard not to grow and learn about God. At BBR I am surrounded by amazing Godly people who have a passion for children ministries and Showing Gods love to everyone around them. The daily devotions and God filled camp fires helped me dig deeper into God and ultimately help make me who I am right now.

I would not be the same if it wasn't for Birch Bay Ranch and the experience I have gained here. Please realize that by taking away this place or by making it so financially difficult that it can no longer be effective for Gods kingdom, it will be taking away a place of growth and love that has been used for decades to impact people for Gods glory. It is my hope and prayer that you will consider all the lives impacted by BBR and act upon what is right in Gods eyes before you make any decisions about the future of Birch Bay Ranch.

Thank you.

The Perfect Plan

My story with Birch Bay Ranch begins when I was eleven years old. I had only been to one other summer camp before, but when my aunt showed my mom a picture in the newspaper of a giant climbing wall, my cousin and I decided that we would love to try the place out. Birch Bay Ranch was amazing as a camper. I don't remember a whole lot of specifics about the activities and whatnot that we did during those weeks at camp (I do remember riding Fernando!), but it was always so fun that we kept wanting to come back.

When I was 14, my cousin and I went to teen camp and I will never forget this moment:

There was one camper there that week who had a mental disability, but the staff all showed him the love of Christ and, through their examples, my fellow campers had been trying to show this same love as well. Although he hadn't come with any friends, we all made sure to say hi or ask him how his day was going or just hang out with him for even just a few minutes every day. One evening we had campfire in Cedar Lodge, as it must have been raining outside or something, and the band was playing some worship songs. This young man all of the sudden got up and went straight to the stage and grabbed the microphone. The room went silent while all of us waited to see what the staff would do -- if maybe he would get in trouble for interrupting or for touching the equipment, but instead everyone was very still and very silent. The boy took the mic and, with all of us listening, said...

"Jesus made you all my friends"

It was such a powerful moment and a memory that will forever stay with me. I renewed my commitment to following Jesus that night, and I know many of the other campers did as well. Birch Bay Ranch, like many people before me have said, is a place where everyone is welcome. God's love is abundant and the staff allow His love to be poured through them onto the campers and visitors every day. I have been absolutely blessed to call Birch Bay Ranch my "home" for 13 years (on and off) and if I could do everything over again, I'd do it exactly the same.

I honestly think that, without Birch Bay Ranch, I would no longer be walking with God despite being raised in a Christian home. It is because of the teachings and examples of the staff at Birch Bay Ranch that I have been able to overcome some of the deepest, darkest, saddest struggles in my life and know that no matter how bad it gets, God ALWAYS loves me.

This spring, I was again blessed with the opportunity to work at camp, even though it was definitely not in the plans I had made for my own life. I am so thankful that no matter what, God is good and God has perfect plans for us to prosper us and not to harm us and perfect timing for those plans. This spring, I was again able to resolidify my decision to follow Jesus and become more rooted in my faith which was perfectly what I needed. I pray that whatever happens with these upcoming decisions, we can feel comforted and at peace knowing that God is good and God has a perfect plan for us if we lean on Him.

Hey! It's Kiwi Aimee!

I have worked most of my life at a camp in New Zealand. A few years ago, I was looking for something to do for a few months between seasonal contracts. When a Canadian volunteer (from Birch Bay Ranch) who was at my camp in NZ suggested this place in Canada I thought it was a great idea. Little did I know how profoundly my time at Birch Bay Ranch would impact my life, character and journey.

The ministry of Christian Camping is important in today's world. Kids are leading such screen based lives that they often have no idea how to have a conversation face to face. Having a chat with their cabin leader on the way to camp fire might be the first time a kid has ever had a real conversation with anyone outside of their family. These moments are so important in the lives of all kids who have ever been to summer camp. Birch Bay isn't about creating jobs in a tough climate, or giving kids a chance to ride a horse or climb a wall. It's about the relationships formed and bonds strengthened in ways that can only happen in that kind of environment.
My experience at Birch Bay Ranch was such that I booked tickets a couple years later and went back for round two. Were it not for my time at Birch Bay Ranch, I wouldn't be in the place that I am spiritually today. BBR has a way of shaping people and sneaking it's way into their hearts in a very short amount of time. I've been to many, many Christian camps, and there really is something special and unique about Birch Bay.

I recently got married, some friends from Birch Bay Ranch came to my wedding in New Zealand, and the Fraess family came to visit us a month or so later. My dream is to share what has been such a huge part of my life with my husband, and to have him meet the rest of the BBR family!

As you have no doubt already read, this camp has been part of so many people's lives for so many years. Everyone who has ever been on staff has stood on the shoulders of those before them. All we can hope for that we can honor the efforts of those who have come before us and served God at Birch Bay Ranch.

Ours is a huge responsibility, to care for this legacy and pass it on to the next generation of staff and campers.

My Best Friends and Family

My name is Melveena and I am 25 years old. I started going to Birch Bay Ranch (BBR) when I was 8 years old. I went to BBR day camps and this was the first time that I started getting involved in summer camp. I continued to go to BBR as a camper until I was 16 years old.

Throughout this time I made some friends at BBR and these friends turned into meeting every summer at BBR friends. We not only were campers at BBR but then also became counselors. These people whom I met throughout my BBR summers were not just co-counselors but we became friends outside of BBR as well, doing activities like going to K-days. Not only were we friends outside BBR but we became best friends, having kids at the same time then watching our kids grown up and play together.

I also had the pleasure of having the opportunity to be the program coordinator at BBR when I was 19 years old. I created the “Amazing Race” (Birch Bay Ranch Version) and enjoyed watching the campers work as teammates. At BBR your not singled out, your not a loser, your not made fun of, your apart of a Christian Family with people who will always love you.

Birch Bay Ranch is my home away from home. It is a safe place and a rescuing place. BBR gave me my best friends-they gave me a family. I still go out to BBR and volunteer. I woke up one morning this past summer and had a desire to go out to BBR and clean toilets- to serve. Jesus washed the disciples feet and so I find myself like Jesus and wished to clean toilets at Birch Bay Ranch. I’m encouraged to have Birch Bay Ranch apart of my life and apart of this community. Kids need to hear about the love and power of Jesus Christ and I so much look forward to sending my children and future children to Birch Bay Ranch. It is a place of love and kindness, fun and excitement, a place where I learned how to canoe, horseback ride, rock climb, and be in love with Jesus with those around me.

Thank you.

Unforgetable Night

I remember the best parts of my childhood summers being getting to go to Birch Bay Ranch for a week.

Birch Bay was always such a fun, safe, loving atmosphere. Every summer I'd make so many friends, and come home filled with the love of Jesus and bursting with so many stories to tell of all the awesome things I learnt and got to do that week at BBR. I think my favorite part of BBR was the atmosphere. Everyone (campers and staff) was always so happy to be there...and the best part was that BBR created that nice safe little bubble where you could really grow in your faith. At camp we all had the same faith and love for Jesus, so you didn't have to be shy or scared to talk about it or feel awkward sharing your beliefs with your new friends as I know I always felt (and sometimes still do!) in "the real world".

There is one summer at BBR that specifically stands out. It was nearing the end of the week, and everyone was at campfire (although this particular night it was inside as it was raining and miserable out). There was one camper, we'll call him M. M had Down Syndrome. I'm sure that week at camp there were campers who may have felt sorry for him, or pitied him and I'm sure there were probably some campers that may have even teased him or got frustrated with him (hey, nobody's perfect...especially not at that age). Despite everything I'm sure life had thrown at him, M had unrelenting faith in God. It was absolutely amazing to witness. M was a friend to everybody, always willing to help out, the first to volunteer for anything, the one singing the loudest and dancing the hardest and the only person who was 100% unafraid to show his love for God in every single action he made.

Honestly I can't even remember the campfire topic, or what brought everything about...I just remember how powerful that night was for not only myself, but for everybody in that room. M showed so many of us the love of God. That one particular night something happened. Campfire went on WAY past lights-out time. There were so many tears, and I think a lot of us invited Jesus into our hearts that night...all because of M.

He was such a beacon of light, such an amazing example of the wonders of having the Lord in your life, his joy and love for life and God were just so infectious. I think M was an example to all of us of what great we can bring into this world by asking Jesus into our hearts, and sharing that love with others.

I am so thankful for BBR and the summers I got to spend there. I honestly think that places, such as BBR, can have such a huge impact on peoples lives - I know it certainly has in mine. BBR has brought me closer to Jesus, helped me grow in my faith, and has helped me be less closed off and scared to share the love of Christ. I hope that BBR will continue to be around for many years to come, and that one day my children can grow to have the life changing experiences I had at such a wonderful place!

Nicole

It's a Part of Us

Hello , my name is Mary Meckley. My heart if heavy for BBR to think that it could every possibly be closed.  The connection with the ranch does not die when you move on.  I suppose that is what it prepares and equips you for, moving on.  The ranch is much more than a retreat centre, much more then a riding stable, means much more than what meets the eye when you drive onto the premises.

The ranch comes alive in all seasons but perhaps the most special is when summer camp happens and you witness hundreds of kids each week , come…unload their luggage, get settled with their cabin mates , meet their new counsellor and start to engage in activities. The kids not only get to try so many different types of activities, but they build relationships and some of those relationships have proven to go on for a lifetime. These kids experience peace, happiness, healthy meals, love and most essential, they meet Jesus. The lives that have been touched, I'm not sure could ever really be "documented".

When I came on at the ranch, I had just moved to Alberta, leaving all my family and friends in Nova Scotia…spent one semester in NBC (at the time). and then , the first summer, moved out to the ranch, not sure what to expect…a little frightened and a lot excited.

What I experienced… how do you put to paper…how can I relay how crucial that time was for me. I guess while IN it, I didn't realize what an impact the ranch was having on my life…I had little life experience at the time and a huge part of my heart missed home.

BBR, in turn, became my home. The staff that I grew so close to, became my family. We spent long busy summers together, learning, helping each other. We spent many cold snowy days and nights together, talking, laughing, having adventures and with all the groups and people and organizations that passed through those gates, into our lives….we were changed.
We learned how to work together, we learned how to serve, how to work hard, how to laugh, how to honour the directors, how to respect others, respect ourselves, we were taught about Jesus and His love for us and for others

A lot was expected of us, there were high standards to achieve and those lessons, those are the things that have made me the woman I am today…those same things I now pass onto my own children.

I arrived at BBR , alone, missing everything that was home for me and what I found, was priceless…I had a second home.  . After I left the ranch after the first "round", I was , at another point in time, years later, needing a place to stay and I was invited back with open arms, invited to come home.

The most important thing that changed my life is that I met my husband at BBR, he has his own personal story about BBR. The 15years he spent growing up at the ranch are irreplaceable.
His mom was the cook at BBR for all of that time and he and his sisters grew up , playing in the woods, walking the road, riding the horses, canoeing the lake, climbing the wall, they had a dream childhood. The times they spent making friends, being counsellors, working in the kitchen, those are memories we often sit around and talk about. Those memories, those years…wow…what can I say…we treasure them, we thank God for them, no dollar amount could ever be placed on what some might consider a piece of land with some buildings on them. There is no price tag high enough to take the place of how the ranch is able to dig down deep into the hearts of the people who go there, work there, grow up there, meet their spouse there and have the chance to experience God's touch and favour on a place.
Hunter Meckley is my husband, he is the best man I know, the hardest worker, best dad to our 2 children, and I have no doubt in my mind that this is due to the fact of how the ranch  poured into his early years shaped him into the man he is today.

Hunter and I will always stand by and stand up for Birch Bay Ranch. We will always and often give thanks for it. And for the future…. our son and daughter will experience Birch Bay Ranch.  It is part of us. Once it's your home, it will always be home, always be a place to return to.

Thank you

Mary Meckley
