Reunion Banquet a Success!

Thank you everyone who came out to The Heart of Birch Bay Ranch Reunion Banquet!  It was a time of connecting with Birch Bay Ranch alumni, family and friends.  Everyone enjoyed spending time together, sleigh rides, and a wonder turkey dinner feast!

This event, and others like it, are intended to connect with and engage with Birch Bay Ranch Alumni.  We are building a  "Birch Bay Ranch Alumni Club" to ensure this rich community is nurtured, staying connected and is aware of any opportunities to become more involved with Birch Bay Ranch and it's ongoing ministry.  Volunteering around the Ranch, helping to raise awareness for BBR in your neighbourhood and attending fundraising events are all opportunities for alumni to stay involved.

If you missed the banquet, please plan on joining us at future events including the Bands n' Bids Fundraiser this spring (dates to be announced) and the Birch Bay Ranch 50th Anniversary celebration at the end of August.  If you are not yet on our mailing list you can sign up here.

Updates from Birch Bay Ranch

  • Welcome our new Board of Directors!  Birch Bay Ranch is so excited to welcome our brand new Board of Directors!  This new board is made up of talented, skilled and knowledgeable people who are passionate about Birch Bay Ranch and it's ministry.  They have already been put to work and are doing a great job moving Birch Bay towards a successful and fruitful future.  Thank you!
  • New cabins!  At long last, Birch Bay Ranch is finally getting new cabins!  Thanks to the generosity of several donors and additional funding from grants, the Ranch plans on putting up two new cabin buildings near the current boys dorms.  Each building will have two levels with two cabins on the main level with a bathroom and staff rooms located upstairs.
  • Riding arena is operational!  The indoor riding arena opened for business in 2015.  Birch Bay Ranch is offering winter riding lessons to the community and groups and has already started to generate a revenue stream from this new facility.  We are excited for the opportunity the new indoor riding arena offers the Ranch and our community!
  • 50th Anniversary Celebration Event!  Birch Bay Ranch has been operating as a summer camp ministry for 50 years!  To celebrate, we are holding a massive event on August 27-28th at Birch Bay Ranch.  We hope to have live entertainment, will be running our activities, enjoying great food and a time of fellowship and celebrating all that the Lord has provided His Ranch!

Family Fun Day - at Birch Bay Ranch

It's that time of year again - the world is green, the sun is hot, and memories of summer camp seem to come flooding back. Ahhh what you wouldn't give for just another taste of camp life at Birch Bay Ranch...

Well, what are you doing next weekend?

Birch Bay Ranch is having their annual Family Fun Day on June 6, 2015 between 2pm and 6pm. It's the perfect time to take a mini-road trip to the country and satisfy your thirst for camp fun and adventure (and - spoiler alert - it's for a good cause!).

The ropes course will be open for anyone ages 8 and up to do some rock climbing, ziplining, rapelling, and all of those other fun activities you remember doing as a kid/staff, and depending on when you were last out, maybe there are some new ones you haven't tried yet! The little ones (kids 8 and under) will be able to have a blast with pony rides and bouncy castles, and there will be hayrides and a delicious barbecue available for the whole family to enjoy.

This year's Family Fun Day also involves a momentous feature - the unveiling of the brand new and fully operational indoor riding arena! Snacks and refreshments will be available inside, so definitely take this opportunity to celebrate with everyone at the ranch on the opening of this new building!

Cost for the day is $20/car or $10/individual, and the money goes towards sending kids to camp that may not have otherwise been able to go - certainly a worthy cause that any of us whose lives have been touched by camp can appreciate.

We hope you'll be able to make it out - we'd love to see as many followers of the Heart of Birch Bay Ranch as possible on property to support Birch Bay Ranch on June 6th!

DETAILS

Date: Saturday, June 6, 2015
Time: 2pm - 6pm
Address: Birch Bay Ranch, 51505 Range Road 215, Sherwood Park
Cost: $20/car or $10/individual - with proceeds going towards sending kids to camp

Important Update on the Future of Birch Bay Ranch

Dear friends,

It is with thankful and happy hearts that we write to share with you the latest news about the future of Birch Bay Ranch.

If you're already planning on attending tomorrow's Prayer Walk at the Ranch at 2pm, we look forward to seeing you there. If you weren't sure you'd be able to attend, we hope you'll find a way -- tomorrow's Prayer Walk will truly be a Praise Walk, as we have much to praise God for!

On Wednesday, May 28th, Birch Bay Ranch's current board of directors (which, to remind you, is comprised of the same nine individuals as the board of North Pointe Community Church) met to approve a new set of bylaws for the Birch Bay Ranch Association. Among other things, these updated bylaws address what we've considered the most crucial issue in governance that threatened to stifle the Ranch's ministry: that the Birch Bay Ranch Association needs a new board that is completely separate from the North Pointe Community Church Board.

The new bylaws will allow a brand new board to be appointed to serve in Birch Bay Ranch's best interests, which is amazing news in light of the struggles the Ranch has gone through over the past year. Certainly, this is something to praise the Lord for! From certain closure, to arguably unfair potential land deals, to a hiatus from discussing the issue at all -- we've now arrived at a solution that will see the work of Birch Bay Ranch carry on into the future, and that will allow North Pointe Community Church to begin the process of letting go. We think this is what's right for everyone involved, and we applaud the board for making this important decision.

The new board will be appointed by the Deacons of North Pointe Community Church, but they will take suggestions and criteria for potential members from the leadership at Birch Bay Ranch. They want to see a passionate, impactful board for this ministry, and so do we! There are so many people who are passionate about camp ministry, have a heart for the work at the Ranch, and have the skills and impact necessary to make a true difference for the Birch Bay Ranch Association. We can't wait for them to get together!

We want to thank you, the Heart of Birch Bay Ranch, for everything you've done for the Ranch this past year. Whether you shared your stories with this blog, attended our alumni events, came to one of BBR's fundraisers, liked our Facebook page or followed us on Twitter, we have appreciated every one of you and are so grateful for your passion for this ministry. We are also so thankful that you've included Birch Bay Ranch in your prayers.

So we hope that you will join us on tomorrow's Praise Walk! We'll be walking through the property, covering each area in prayer, blessing this summer's staff and future campers, and praising the Lord for his faithfulness in this situation, and for continuing to pour out his blessings over Birch Bay Ranch!

Please stay in touch with us as we bring you updates on Birch Bay Ranch, invite you to alumni and supporter events, and continue to share with you the incredible impact that Birch Bay Ranch has had on so many lives.

Birch Bay Ranch has a heart, and it's beating strong. You are the Heart of Birch Bay Ranch!

Spring Prayer Walk

When:  Sunday, June 1st at 2:00 PM.
Where:  Birch Bay Ranch (51505 Range Road 215, Sherwood Park)
Why:  To pray for Birch Bay Ranch

With summer camp approaching the Heart of Birch Bay Ranch would like to invite you to join us on Sunday, June 1st for a day of prayer and fellowship at Birch Bay Ranch.  We will be walking around the property praying for the ministry, staff, buildings, facilities, activities, the Board of Directors and the future of Birch Bay Ranch. It's also a great opportunity to re-connect with alumni and friends who all share the same passion for this ministry.

The first Heart of Birch Bay Ranch Prayer Walk took place last fall.  It was well attended by staff, volunteers, alumni and supporters of the ranch.  We lifted BBR to the Lord, had an amazing time of prayer and re-connecting with friends, old and new.  We are looking forward to this upcoming prayer walk.

Please join us on June 1st at 2:00PM!

Bands & Bids: A Concert & Silent Auction Fundraiser for Birch Bay Ranch

You're invited to the second annual Bands & Bids on Thursday, May 8th at the Strathcona County Community Centre Agora in Sherwood Park!

The concert will be headlined by Darryl Fraess & Cross Country and feature special guests The Introverts. Other special performing guests are to be announced. So far, we have some fun items for the silent auction and we think there will be something for everyone!

This event is an important fundraiser for Birch Bay Ranch. Funds raised will allow kids who can't afford it to come to camp this summer, and will help the Ranch create the best possible program for them when they get here! It is always our goal to see as many kids come to camp as possible, and for them to encounter God and experience positive life. Will you help?

You can help us out by attending the event, bidding on some sweet items, enjoying free refreshments, and re-connecting with old friends and BBR Alumni!

Another way you can get involved: Birch Bay Ranch is still in need of auction item donations -- if you or someone you know has anything to donate, please email communications@birchbayranch.com right away!

BBR Reunited

Remember when we would stand in a puddle of dishwater, slamming trays of dishes into the sterilizer.   You soaked yourself with water when you sprayed inside of that metal bowl, but you only did that once before learning the art of deflection.

Remember when we could take the horses for a swim in the lake.  We would ride them down right beside the Main Lodge and sit on their backs as they swam up to the necks in the deep water.

The Heart of Birch Bay Ranch Reunion Banquet was a time of connecting with old friends, meeting new ones and remembering the years we spent at Birch Bay Ranch.  Among those who attended were past campers, staff, volunteers, and family friends.

Attendees trickled in throughout the afternoon.  Every arrival was followed by smiles, laughter, enormous hugs, and all the things that come with seeing a dear friend after a long time apart.  The horse drawn sleigh picked up guests at the Main Lodge for a rides through back pasture.

After an afternoon of visiting we all sat down to a turkey dinner with all the trimmings.  The Main Lodge was still decorated for Christmas.  I could hear Birch Bay Ranch alumni from many years ago say “Remember when we used to put the coloured napkins in the cups like this for banquets?”  Those green and red napkins have been classing up our plastic camp cups for decades.

In the corner of the dining hall was the Donation Tree.  Guests could put a donation in a small, golden box and hang it on the tree like a decoration.  They could also write a prayer and tie it to the tree.  We are pleased to announce that the Donation Tree raised over $1400 for Birch Bay Ranch!

After the meal everyone congregated in the fireplace area for some good old fashioned camp fun.  After a series of door prizes were given away we played a round of “I Have a Pain”, a favourite Birch Bay Ranch improv. skit that truly has spanned over all generations of BBR’s existence.

“Mother, I have a pain.”

“You say it’s going to rain?”

“No, Mother.  I have a pain and I think I’m going to die.”

“You say it’s going to rain in the sky?”

“No.  I have a pain and I think I’m going to D....I....E.”

Gone are the days of ‘show more emotion’ or ‘western’ style of this skit.  Participants had to improvise with ‘gangster’, ‘old timey mystery’, and ‘Jamaican’ style.  Whole-hearted, full belly laughs came from both the audience and the performers.  Our hearts really were filled with joy.

“I got to play a game of I Have a Pain with the people who I first saw playing it when I was itty bitty. I was feeling so blessed,” said Garret Fraess, the youngest participant of the skit (if you're not including the cameo appearance from 2 year old Sophie...).

After the skit, and a few more door prizes, the current Birch Bay Ranch staff were recognized for their hard work.  Information on the current land ownership/governance situation was shared, as well as a request for prayer.  It has been decided that those involved with Birch Bay Ranch will strive to run its programs and ministries to the very best of their ability, every day, envisioning a long and successful future for the ranch and its outreach to children in our community.

We don’t know what the future holds for Birch Bay Ranch, but we do know that this summer the doors are open for summer camp.  In the summer of 2014 we will have the opportunity to tell 800 children about Jesus Christ and share His love with them.  If anything else, our efforts over this very difficult year has given us another opportunity to run a full season of summer camp and an opportunity to see lives change in both campers and the young staff who will be on property.  For this we give thanks to the Lord.

The people at the Heart of Birch Bay Ranch Reunion banquet represented over four decades of Birch Bay Ranch staff and campers.  It was incredibly special to sit in a room of people of all ages and many different walks of life, and feel connected to every one of them.  We all have something in common.  An experience that changed our lives, that gave us life-long friends (and often our spouses), skills and abilities that took us into the next chapters of our lives, and most importantly, gave us the opportunity to meet and grow in our relationship with Jesus.  Shared passion is a very powerful thing, and to share a love and appreciation for this very special ministry is an incredible gift we are all thankful for.

Thank you for attending.  We hope to have another Heart of Birch Bay Ranch Alumni event this year.  If you have suggestions or ideas for the event, please email them to birchbayranch@gmail.com.

The Love of Jesus

Eight years ago, I made my first (and thus far only) visit to Birch Bay Camp as a camper after winning a CKER radio contest. It was a difficult time in my life; a parent had recently been seriously hurt in a car accident before I left for the camp, and I was very emotionally fragile.

I ended up in Cabin #8 with Riley, Kyle, and Dustin as my counselors. My experience with the campers there was a bit of a rocky one, between fellow campers invading my prayer journal, rough nights of missing home, and a few other rough spots. However, my counselors and the other staff members - Boots, Jackie, and some others - did their best to reach out to me and give me the support that I needed so badly. They showed me the love of Jesus in a very practical, personal way, whether by entertaining me with their stories, funny habits (I remember Wendell's evil laugh well), or just listening to me.

Today, I am now a student at Vanguard College, currently in my third year of a music major. God has used my week-long experience at BBR to show me that He is always with me, and that He will never leave me nor forsake me. The love that you guys showed to me is something that I now try to show to others at school - especially those who are struggling and in need of a listening friend.

I hope and pray that you guys are all doing well and still serving God. Thank you for making a difference in my life.

In Christ,

J.d. Engler

News Update

The Board of Directors for the Birch Bay Ranch Association (BBRA), who are the same board members for North Pointe Community Church (NPCC), have decided to delay the decision to transfer the land and assets to NPCC. All of the land and assets currently belong to the BBRA, and will remain as such.

For the Heart of Birch Bay Ranch and all of its supporters (YOU!) this is good news.  It means Birch Bay Ranch has a little more time to seek counsel, gather funds and rally the support that will help us to develop a passionate and effective board, and ensure the ministry continues successfully into the future.

Here is the official statement:

Further to the information meeting, the Boards of the NPCC and the BBRA have decided to slow the process of separation of NPCC and BBRA. The decision has been made to defer the decision to transfer the land/Property to NPCC. The BBRA will continue in the short term to be governed as it has since its inception. The two organizations will separate financially to allow BBR to become financially self-sufficient as an independent organization going forward.

Birch Bay Ranch will still be governed by the same Board of Directors that governs NPCC, although NPCC has decided they would like to separate from the ministry of BBR, including separating financially.  We hope to use the coming time to prove that the Ranch is both a viable business and a productive ministry, without the express financial support of NPCC.

It is our hope that after we prove BBR can survive financially without NPCC that the Board of Directors will separate from the BBRA without transferring the land/assets from the BBRA.  We hope that once BBR proves its financial stability that the board will allow the BBRA to amend its bylaws to redefine its membership and enable us to elect a new Board of Directors for the BBRA that is separate from NPCC and passionate about Birch Bay Ranch.  This will mean a very positive future!

In the meantime, we ask that you continue to stay involved! We are so grateful for the passion and care you’ve shown for Birch Bay Ranch in the past few months. The delay of the decision to transfer the land has been a great step for the BBRA, but it is only one step on the long journey we still face. The Heart of Birch Bay Ranch needs to you! Your help bringing Birch Bay Ranch into a bright, sustainable future will be key in ensuring its success.

In mid-January, we will be hosting an Alumni Reunion Banquet out at the Ranch, and you’re invited! We hope to use this time to meet fellow BBR supporters and alumni, reminisce about good times, and continue building a wonderful base of support for the Ranch. Please keep this in mind, tell your BBR Alumni friends, and stay tuned for more information about this event!

Please continue to check back with us for more news about Birch Bay Ranch. Please pray for BBR, its Board of Directors, and its staff. And please consider donating to Birch Bay Ranch – we need your help now more than ever!

If you have any questions or want to know how to get more involved, please email birchbayranch@gmail.com.

Thank you!

I LOVED IT!

It all started when my friend Hailey told me that she went to Birch bay Ranch for like 5 years and I thought that I should give it a shot! I can honestly say that i LOVED it!!

I felt at home..... Like they were my family! My first time there I had Annette and Madi as my cabin leaders  and I LOVED them! To this day i still do! I love every single staff member! In my cabin, which was cabin 9, we made fake names to call each other, and mine was Sammy! Some staff members may know me as Sammy!

I love that place and without it my summers would be terrible! Staying at home, alone with no AMAZING staff members or horses to have fun with!

I'm Jenna, 12 years old, and I LOVE BIRCH BAY RANCH!!!!

For Generations to Come

I was about 14 and invited out to a teen retreat in february, my dad allowed me to attend and I had an amazing time, I dedicated my life that weekend. That summer and every summer for the next 5 years I was there teaching vaulting and horseback riding and I know that my life would have taken a very different turn if I hadn't spent my summers there, my final summer at BBR, was actually only 2 weeks as I prepared to leave an abusive husband with my 2 daughters who were 6 mths and 18mths at the time. I couldn't leave the one place that had made me feel safe and protected without at least saying goodbye.

I now live in Ontario, those 2 daughter are now 14, and 13, and have many siblings. I want to bring them for visit as they hear so much about my summers at BBR and the positive experience it was for me. My oldest still looks through my albums and is always drawn to the photos of Fernando allowing campers the ability to stand and do other stunts on his back.

Wonderful memories. I pray daily that the Ranch that has been there for so many children and teens continues to be there for generations to come.

Prayer Walk

"Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus."  Philippians 4:6-7

The Heart of Birch Bay Ranch hosted a Prayer Walk of Birch Bay Ranch on Sunday, October 6th.  The purpose of the Prayer Walk was to gather Birch Bay Ranch supporters and to lift up the property and ministry of BBR to God.  We wanted to pray for the land, buildings, activities, programs, staff, ministry and the future of God’s ranch.

The Prayer Walk was attended by Birch Bay Ranch alumni and supporters from early 1970s to present day.  It was so encouraging to connect with several generations of people who served in this ministry and who were positively impacted by it throughout the decades.  Thank you so much for joining us.

“It was so cool to watch the different generations of ministry and love get together. I also got to see the people who did “I Have A Pain” when my mom was a camper,” said Garrett Fraess.

We started off the Prayer Walk with a prayer of praise and thanksgiving.  Birch Bay Ranch has been such an amazing blessing to all of us.  God has continued to provide this ministry with its physical and spiritual needs from when the first shovel went into the ground until now.  When you pray for Birch Bay Ranch, remember to give thanks for all that it already has,  for all of the hearts that have been changed, and lives that are saved (and will be saved) in God’s care at the ranch.

We walked from the Cedar Lodge, to the horse area, the indoor riding arena, boys dorms and future cabin site, girls dorms, ropes course, lakefront campfire area, archery range and finished in the Main Lodge.  There we fellowshipped with one another and enjoyed delicious cinnamon buns warm and fresh out of the oven!

This Prayer Walk brought a sense of peace and belonging to our hearts.  The weather was perfect and the fall colours were absolutely stunning as we walked through the property.  It was such a success that we hope to make this an annual event.  In the spirit of thanksgiving, we invite you to join us in continual prayer for Birch Bay Ranch and its ministry.

Please continue to pray for:

  • The ministry.  That children and adults will continue to discover God and experience positive life change year round!
  • The property and buildings.  Pray a blessing over the property and the buildings this ministry needs to continue to be successful.
    • Indoor Riding Arena:  This building is beautiful but cannot be complete until a solution is found for the fire-emergency water supply.
    • New cabins:  Birch Bay Ranch needs new cabins!!
  • The staff.  Please pray for the current seasonal staff, volunteers and specifically for the year round staff at Birch Bay Ranch
    • Fraess Family:  Darryl, Sharon, Ronald, Garrett and Shyla.
    • Eric & Deanna Barker
    • Malcolm Beecher
    • Alma Dawkins
  • The people.  Please pray for the campers, school groups, church groups and community groups that use Birch Bay Ranch.  May they be kept safe, have fun, and be touched by BBR's ministry.
  • The Board of Directors.  Lift up the governing body of the Birch Bay Ranch Association.  Pray that they receive wisdom, discernment, love and support.
  • The programs and activities  (Let's thank God for the great things we have at Birch Bay Ranch)
    • Horses:  pray for the continued health of these beautiful animals, safety in trail rides and lessons, and that they can continue to be a tool in the ministry.
    • Ropes Course:  pray for the continued safety of this activity.  That it will generate stories of adventure, self confidence, and victory from the people who experience it.
    • Summer Camp programming:  that the program of last summer will resonate in the hearts of campers who heard the gospel message at BBR.  Pray for the future program including chapels, campfires, skits and speakers - that the message will fall on open and prepared hearts.
  • The Heart of Birch Bay Ranch:  please pray for us too!  That we can continue to generate support for Birch Bay Ranch that will help take the ministry successfully in the future.

What Birch Bay Ranch Has Done for Me

I was 6 yrs old when I started, going on seven.  My first year I was horrible but birch bay kept me . The following years they treated me like one of their own, and it was the best years of my life .

I am special needs and was treated no differently than other kids, which was the best thing . Sharon and Darryl became like my second parents.  I looked forward every year to coming back, I would usually spend 2 to 3 weeks.

There I got a nickname of Cowboy and I still like being called it even though I'm 22. I loved the horseback riding and bible stories they told.  They also allowed me to come out for work experience, and taught me a lot thanks to their teaching and experience.  I got a job at white mud equine center.

Is Owning Land Beneficial to Birch Bay Ranch?

Birch Bay Ranch Association owns the land it sits on. “Birch Bay Ranch Association” appears as the owner on the Land Title itself.

At the information meeting on September 10th, the following question was raised: “How can the current Board of Directors say that removing the asset from the books of BBR Association and putting them on the books of North Pointe, when the land title is in the name of the BBR Association, is in the best interests of the BBR Association?”

We think this is an important question to consider, and is really the crux of the whole issue surrounding Birch Bay Ranch Association transferring its land and assets to another non-profit organization. The answer that was given at the meeting was: “I have yet to see where owning the assets have had any material effect on the operation of the Ranch. So owning the assets, to this point in time, not having any material effect on the Ranch in days gone by, would seem to be somewhat superfluous at this point in time.”

We posit that owning the land has been, and will continue to be extremely beneficial to the operations of Birch Bay Ranch. Here are the reasons why:

The Christian camping ministry model

Camp ministry is a unique ministry.

It differs from others in that we invite people out to our property, to live together in temporary community. Campers don’t just come for a few hours to hear about Jesus. They come to stay. While we live with them in temporary community, we show them the love of God, both through intentional programming and through giving them life-changing experiences like engaging in nature and challenging themselves physically on our ropes course, horses or other outdoor activities. For these reasons, our land and buildings have proven to be crucial to the ministry and business of Birch Bay Ranch.

As Steve Archibald, General Director for Medeba (a successful independent camp in Ontario) and Chair Elect for CCI/Canada, says, “Aside from human resources, our greatest resource that we leverage for ministry is our property, buildings and activity structures. We need property for these things to sit on. It is a ministry tool! It’s like saying the dining hall or the rodeo ring don’t benefit the Ranch.”

Some ministries or charitable organizations are capable of existing anywhere. An organization that clothes the homeless can rent space anywhere there is a need and complete their ministry objectives. Some churches don’t even necessarily need to own their own building (there are many churches in Edmonton whose ministry model dictates they can operate out of any space – movie theatres, university lecture spaces, school gymnasiums, etc.). But our ministry – one that requires kids and adults to experience nature and stay in our permanent structures – depends upon our land. The property of Birch Bay Ranch is a ministry tool in the same way that our horses, chapel skits, or ropes activities are. We use these tools directly to minister to our guests. We could not run the same ministry somewhere else.

Sustainability and ministry continuance

While Birch Bay Ranch Association owns its own land, it can be empowered to make its own decisions regarding the development and use of that land. As ministry needs change, we are able to adapt – whether that means building a new shop to better maintain our property and equipment, or building new cabins to house more campers and guests. These are changes made to our own property, not made to benefit an asset that belongs to some other organization.

Birch Bay Ranch currently owns the land. If the land were to be taken away, there would be little incentive to improve the land or buildings. It seems unwise to invest in buildings or structures that could be lost, should the lessor choose to terminate the lease or sell the property. At the information meeting, multiple individuals asked what will happen at the end of the proposed five-year lease period. The answer that was given repeatedly was, “we’ll see when we get there.” That isn’t enough assurance that all of the work, volunteer hours, donations and funds that can go into the property in that time won’t just be lost at the end of five years.

“No ministry that requires buildings to do ministry would not want to own and have control of the land portion of those assets, otherwise you risk ministry continuance, as control is in the hands of non-stakeholders,” says Steve Archibald.

Grants, donations and fundraising efforts

Prior to the mid-eighties, Edmonton Central Pentecostal did own the land and assets of Birch Bay Ranch. However, it was decided by the Board at the time that it would be in the best interests of Birch Bay Ranch if its own, separate Association were formed and the land and assets be officially transferred to it.

This decision was a good one. Many granting organizations will not fund churches. By becoming its own Association, incorporated under the Societies Act and registered with the Canadian Charities Directorate, Birch Bay Ranch was able to apply for and receive hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of funds that it would not have received otherwise.

There is also a large donor base that will happily donate to a kids’ camp, but would rather not donate to one church in particular. These people all have their own churches that they would rather donate to, but have camp ministry in their hearts as another avenue for giving. Many of these people will no longer donate to Birch Bay Ranch if they know the funds are really going towards the asset owned by a particular church.

Furthermore, many individuals and organizations will not feel comfortable donating to capital projects (like the building of new cabins or further development of the land) if they know those new developments are not actually owned by Birch Bay Ranch and truly belong to a particular church. There are other camps in Alberta who are leasing the land they operate on, and have experienced serious difficulty securing funds from donors to develop land, buildings and other facilities. Because donors feel uncomfortable contributing funds that will ultimately go to a land owner separate from the camp they support, these camps have found leasing to be a huge detriment to their ministry. Several camps in this situation have shared their struggles with us.

One of the biggest detriments to giving the land away and being expected to buy it back is the fact that instead of fundraising to build new cabins, which the Ranch definitely needs, it will be forced to launch a massive fundraising effort to raise enough money to purchase the land that it already owns. In this sense, the Board of the Birch Bay Ranch Association will be crippling its own organization by essentially putting it in debt for the buyout value of the land.

If the ministry hopes to continue beyond the five-year lease period, there is simply no choice but to buy back its own land. For this reason, it is so obviously in the best interest of Birch Bay Ranch to continue owning the land and assets that it has owned for the past twenty-five years.
