Eight years ago, I made my first (and thus far only) visit to Birch Bay Camp as a camper after winning a CKER radio contest. It was a difficult time in my life; a parent had recently been seriously hurt in a car accident before I left for the camp, and I was very emotionally fragile.
I ended up in Cabin #8 with Riley, Kyle, and Dustin as my counselors. My experience with the campers there was a bit of a rocky one, between fellow campers invading my prayer journal, rough nights of missing home, and a few other rough spots. However, my counselors and the other staff members - Boots, Jackie, and some others - did their best to reach out to me and give me the support that I needed so badly. They showed me the love of Jesus in a very practical, personal way, whether by entertaining me with their stories, funny habits (I remember Wendell's evil laugh well), or just listening to me.
Today, I am now a student at Vanguard College, currently in my third year of a music major. God has used my week-long experience at BBR to show me that He is always with me, and that He will never leave me nor forsake me. The love that you guys showed to me is something that I now try to show to others at school - especially those who are struggling and in need of a listening friend.
I hope and pray that you guys are all doing well and still serving God. Thank you for making a difference in my life.
In Christ,
J.d. Engler
